The weather in the UK is one of the things that the UK is known for throughout the world as it is extremely diverse when compared with a lot of other countries. The weather in the UK is influenced by a lot of different factors including the strong winds that come off from the Atlantic Ocean and the position of the Isles on the globe. The weather in the UK is ever changing and over the past few years, the UK has been heavily influenced by climate change and a lot of other factors leading to some of the most extremely weather conditions that the UK has seen for many years.

The Weather in the UK

When it comes to the weather in the UK, there are four main seasons which bring a host of different weather conditions. The Winter tends to be a cold, rainy season in the UK which will often see snow and other poor conditions. The Winter will see all of the leaves on the trees die and will make for an eerie scene across the country. The Winter usually sees temperatures close to freezing point during the night times and often, there is a lot of rain.

The Spring in the UK is an overall much nicer scene with less biting temperatures and a climate that sees less rainfall than in the Winter time. Having said this, temperatures are still not exactly warm in the Spring and you will notice that the leaves on the trees will be starting to grow back due to the warmer weather. Spring usually still see’s some rain but temperatures will be hovering around the 10 degrees mark a lot of the time which isn’t too bad if you need to head outdoors. There is often cold or warm spells in the Spring however which can bring snow or even days where you might be able to head outside in just a t-shirt.

The Summer is the warmest season here in the UK and the UK weather is usually pretty pleasant during this time. The UK doesn’t experience the warmest summers in the world with temperatures usually hovering around the 20 degree mark but it is usually pleasant enough to head outside and enjoy the weather. The summer often gives way to hotter weather when warmer air is brought to the country from across the Atlantic or mainland Europe and this can often mean hot and humid conditions for many parts of the country. Heat waves like this usually only last a few days however and due to the humidity, they will often bring along thunderstorms and heavy rain with them.

The Autumn in the UK is very similar to the Spring. The temperature begins to cool down around September time and the leaves will begin to die once again due to the cooler weather. Autumn will often see quite cold temperatures and it will begin to become a lot more wet than in the summer months. Often, temperatures can stay warm for a few weeks into the Autumn but Winter will usually set in pretty quickly.

Rainfall and Sunshine in the UK

Overall, the UK has quite a wet climate and you will be sure to notice that if you have ever visited the country. There is basically always a risk of rain although there is a lot more rain in the Autumn, Winter and Spring months than in the UK. On average, the UK will see most of its rainfall in December with around 90 millimetres falling across the Isles. There will also be quite a lot of rain in the UK in November and October too as well as January. Rain in the Summer months is still quite common but it is usually much less common than in the Winter months. On average, rainfall will be between 50 and 60 millimetres in the summer months which often means that you can head out without the chance of rain on the ‘nice’ days.

When it comes to the sunshine, most of the sunshine will hit the UK in the summer months too with an average of around 11.3 hours of sunshine per day in July and August. When it gets to the Winter months however, there will be very little sunshine in the UK with January averaging just 1.1 hours of sunshine per day. It is also a similar story in February and December. Overall throughout the year, the UK averages just 5.6 hours per day of sunshine which is relatively low compared to the climates of a lot of other countries around the world.

The changing weather conditions in the UK

Over the past 20 years or so, the UK has seen a lot of changes to its climates with more extreme weather becoming quite a regular occurrence. For example, just last year, there was some of the heaviest snowfall that has ever been recorded in the UK’s history across the country which caused widespread chaos for many of the UK’s citizens. This was caused by the gulf stream shifting further to the south which allowed the UK to be encapsulated in the Antarctic conditions. This left the UK experiencing extremely cold conditions and there was feet of snow across the country too. This is not a regular occurrence in the UK.

As well as this, just a few years ago, the UK experienced some of the heaviest rainfall that it had ever seen which left to floods across the country and houses being ruined. All of this rain hit the UK in basically one day and caused widespread devastation. Just last year, there was the hottest October on record too with temperatures hitting nearly 30 degrees centigrade. All of these things are clear signs that the weather in the UK is changing and the overall temperature throughout the year is becoming more mild on the whole too.

The outlook for the UK over the next few years is that the weather is expected to change ever further and become ever more mild. This is very worrying for the climate of the planet and the UK’s animal species too.
